When the camera lights on Miss Cat Deeley, she has her hair in a coronet of braids, very Swiss milkmaid, and a shimmery deconstructed fringe around her shoulder — sort of like a feather boa only made out of bits of pink and white and silver fabric. I get that fresh eyes can be a good thing, but is that going to render them more or less useful? And let us begin! Oh, wait. London Reilly Duomo — very cute, and very gender neutral. Either way, super sweet looking family. Because guess what? Seriously, how many people have they crammed into that tiny apartment?
For the first time in nine seasons, contestants were allowed to choose their own groups for the group choreography round, in contrast to previous seasons where the groups were assigned. With cuts made following each round of choreography, thirty-five dancers remained at the close of the week, prior to the selection of the Top In January , Fox announced that So You Think You Can Dance would be returning for its ninth season in a format similar to that seen in season one; a single two-hour episode per week, eliminating each week’s results show.
This contrasts with the season one format where judges would nominate a bottom three couples and home viewers would vote out two dancers, the results being pre-taped and shown at the beginning of the next week’s episode.
Posts about sytycd season 9 written by perica Erica: Tyce mentions the fabulous personalities on this season, like Will and Amelia, and then chooses.
So we’re basically expecting to feel the angst and sorrow tonight, and not just because four contestants will be eliminated. Also: Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt, choreographers and founders of modern dance troupe Ballet Boyz, will be handling the guest-judge duties tonight. It’s an angry number that El does excellently, but robot man Cyrus doesn’t have the necessary skills. Regardless, they both bring the passion with a full-on, extended liplock at the beginning.
What the judges say: Nigel says Cyrus needs to lower his shoulders and get into the movement, but Eliana succeeds in combining character and technique. Mary puts in her OED entry bid by describing El as “swaggerocious. The big “assisted run” that had brought the emotional impact doesn’t really stand out this time, mainly because Tiffany sort of walks it on her own. What the judges say: Mary wants to call because they murdered the routine.
Nigel gives props, but also notes that George gave one of his best performances. But can Amelia stick out her rear like a French poodle as Mia says? They look awesome in the period attire and have the loose limbs and sense of humor that should help them pull this off, but it doesn’t quite work. Technique, yes. Performance, no.
It’s a joyous occasion for whoever wins, but And though the Fox summer hit only aired once a week in its ninth season, the usual magic applied. Plus, now that all has been said and danced, as promised we’ve got two winners for a change! You get our drift. This finale kicked off, as usual, with the entire top 20 returning to dance a brand new group number, this one by Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott , so it was angsty and raw in each choreographer’s respective ways.
Then it was on to repeat performances of the judges’ favorite numbers, from Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo ‘s jazzy hip-hop routine “Love Cats” there were only a couple of NappyTabs dances early this season—maternity leave, wouldn’t you know!

Tears, yelling, laughter and sirens. Let the carnage ensue. Wednesday night’s Vegas episode gave us plenty of the promised drama, including those who voiced sassy frustration over the audition process and judges comments, as if they had never seen the show before and had no idea what to expect. But let’s get to the good stuff. The initial solo round, a chance for the contestants to remind the judges why they made it to Sin City, pretty much set the tone for the rest of the week.
Some arrived to the Planet Hollywood resort only to be immediately cut after a brief performance, missing the opportunity to work with the esteemed choreographers. No mercy. The hip-hop choreography round, taught by Season 4 finalists Comfort and Twitch, illustrated the interesting paradox of the current manifestation of the genre. Hip-hop was created as an original, improvisational art form, and while many street dancers still hold to that philosophy, choreographed hip-hop and the resulting structure has dramatically risen in popularity.
Therefore, the untrained yet brilliant hip-hop dancers tend to struggle with learning someone else’s choreography, which is based on the creator’s own improvisational patterns of movement. Two such dancers flat-out quit as the choreography was being taught. Fellow crew member Boris Penton at least attempted the choreography, but his lack of confidence showed in the performance; off he went.
After almost half of the original Vegas hopefuls had been slashed from the competition, the Broadway portion with Tyce Diorio saw final Dragon House member Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer alive and kickin’. The Footloose -style partnering routine didn’t faze him one bit.

Nigel Lythgoe announced that the results show had been cut from the format, meaning that only one show aired each week. In January , it was announced that season 9 will only have one two-hour show each week, similar to the first season ‘s format. Series creator Nigel Lythgoe stated that each week’s episode will end with the reveal of the bottom 3 couples after every couple bottom or safe has performed the new week’s choreography.
This gives the judges an additional dance to judge prior to deciding who they will eliminate and for the bottom 3 couples to get a chance to redeem themselves in hopes of getting saved. He also announced that there will be two winner this season, one girl and one boy. This season’s live shows began with a Top 20, however, Nigel mentioned during the results of the Top 16 show that Fox originally was only to allow sixteen dancers to the live performances.
This explains why the season had, not one, but two double eliminations. The finale and the Week 8 episode aired on Tuesdays rather than Wednesdays. For the very first time, the dancers were allowed to choose their own groups for the group choreography round. Sonya Tayeh , Jason Gilkison , and Travis Wall only participated in panel on the round they choreographed jazz, ballroom, and contemporary, respectively.
During weeks 5, 6, 7, and 8, different All-Stars from past seasons came and partnered up with a contestant for that week. Some All-Stars danced in more weeks than others. The All-Stars Dance Pool features some of the best and most popular dancers that have been featured on previous seasons. Sign In Don’t have an account?
Get out of here! A lot of the credit goes to Chehon, whose quality of movement was astonishing and whose torso really looks amazing under a blue light. Witney, though, had an amazing night, too. Is it just me? But ultimately, as Mary Murphy pointed out, there was absolutely no chemistry between the couple, and even worse, their footwork was about as sharp as a down comforter. Will displayed monumental physical strength — especially when he held Amelia upside down and flush to his chest — and I loved the way she turned to liquid when he dipped her.

Archives RSS. This week’s show opened with a fairly sloppy and unconnected opening number – there were multiple instances of the dancers not being in synch – by apparently new choreographer Peter Chu. It did very little for me, and the whole thing felt poorly rehearsed. That’s one of the weirdest groups we’ve ever had. Just ONE contemporary dancer Will? Unheard of on this show. I’m not complaining, mind you. I like the diversity in dance styles represented by this crew, but I can’t help but think that this is a very odd collection of contestants, especially given the absence of some early frontrunners.
I think the multiple double-elimination weeks due to July 4 and the Olympics dramatically impacted the progress of this season. There’s no question that Amelia and Matthew would still be in this game if they were only doing one elimination per week.
After saying goodbye to four contestants last week, 16 hopefuls remain on So You Think You Can Dance and will be fighting to keep their place in the competition! It’s all screened in black and white But of course there’s a competition to get to, and the totally brilliant Christina Applegate is here to help out Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy on the panel. So let’s get this thing underway! The contestants are dishing secrets about their partners this week, so we start off by learning that at George’s first track meet he peed his pants at the sound of the starting pistol!
George doesn’t seem too impressed that Tiffany – who he reveals is super-smart – let that one slip.
